A snapshot of some of the Public Engagement and Outreach activities that BiD4BESt have been involved in 2022

Our BiD4BESt students inspiring the next generation student!

Carolina Andonie (UDUR) – School visit – March 2022 – A Science Camp was given by 5 PhD/post-docs from Durham University to 50 Year 4 pupils (8–9-year-olds) at the Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School.

This fun filled interactive day consisted of 5 activities: ‘Agility Astro Course’, ‘Crew Assembly’, ‘Mission Control’, ‘Speed of Light’ activity and ‘Make your own crater and was related to the phases of the moon. The pupils enjoyed learning and drawing the moon phases on Oreos, with the highlight for the pupils being the stargazing session at the end of the day. Well done to Carolina and co (Durham) who helped inspire future STEM learners.

Brivael Laloux (NOA) set up a recent outreach activity after contacting one of the Physics teachers at the private French International school – LycĂ©e Franco-HellĂ©nique EugĂšne Delacroix High School based in Agia Paraskevi, Athens. Brivael aimed this activity at a class of enthusiastic 17–18-year-old students and the hour-long session encompassed explanations and activities of Black Holes, what they were, how they are created and the interesting ways in which they can be detected. There were lots of interesting questions after the presentation and hopefully some of these students will have caught the ‘Astronomy bug’. Well done to Brivael and good to see BiD4BESt out in the wider community.

Collaborations between IvĂĄn Muñoz-RodrĂguez & Antonis Georgakakis (BiD4BESt) generate articles for the monthly edition of the Spanish  AstronomĂa magazine The magazine has been in publication for 37 years, is the only Astronomy focussed magazine in Spain and still printed in paper format. The magazine includes articles from both professional and amateur astronomers (mainly outreach). The magazine collaborates with the Spanish astronomical society and with other different astronomical associations. The September edition can be found here and also on Ivan’s Twitter account

A reminder to take time to listen to this great Podcast – Pilgrims of the Cosmos. A collaboration of IvĂĄn Muñoz-RodrĂguez, Nischal Acharya BiD4BESt, and Italo Balestra, Astrophysicist / Data Scientist at OmegaLambdaTec

A sample of the Workshops and Conferences the BiD4BESt network attended/presented at in 2022.

PANCHROMATIC VIEW OF THE LIFE-CYCLE OF AGN Workshop, European Space Astronomy Centre, Madrid, Spain, 14-16 September 2022

Great contribution to this workshop by Carolina Andonie (Durham BiD4BESt) who was the chairperson for the ‘Life-cycle and evolution talk’ section and also gave a talk herself titled ‘A panchromatic view of infrared quasars: excess star formation and radio emission in the most heavily obscured systems’. Great work Carolina.

European Astronomical Society Annual meeting, June/July 2022, Spain, attended by some of our BiD4BESt Early-Stage Researchers.

IvĂĄn Muñoz-RodrĂguez (NOA) presented a talk ‘Towards the next generation of X-ray surveys with Athena’.

Blessing Musiimenta (UNIBO) gave a poster talk in the AGN feedback session about her work. Blessing also gave an interesting oral presentation in the session for African-European collaboration session which was about her journey to obtaining her BiD4BESt PhD position and her current research. This also included sharing part of her research to a wider and diverse audience of non AGN researchers. This offered Blessing a great platform to share the different opportunities, trainings and outreach work that BiD4BESt-ITN offers an ESRs and what research is being done in the network.

The COSPAR Conference July 2022 attended by BiD4BESt Early-Stage Researchers.

IvĂĄn Muñoz-RodrĂguez (NOA) presented a talk ‘Properties and Evolution of Active Galactic Nuclei in Galaxy Clusters’.

‘What Drives the Growth of Black Holes’

A Dartmouth-Durham Extragalactic Workshop, ReykjavĂk Iceland, 26-30 September 2022. Many of the BiD4BESt Principal Investigators and Early-Stage Researchers attended and presented their work at this superb conference set against a beautiful backdrop of dramatic Icelandic landscape.

See IvĂĄn Muñoz-RodrĂguez (NOA) poster: https://zenodo.org/record/7102270, and Blessing Musiimenta (UNIBO) gave a poster talk about her PhD work. Blessing had the opportunity to discuss her work with different researchers who found her work interesting and gave valuable feedback and comments that is helping to shape the current paper she is working on. Blessing said this conference offered many varied and interesting works, especially about AGN feedback, and gave Blessing an insight of the current research related to her own work which she found very useful.

Talk Activities around the BiD4BESt consortium

  • May 2022: IvĂĄn Muñoz-RodrĂguez (NOA), Antonis Georgakakis (NOA), Silvia Bonoli (DIPC) gave talks at a Workshop organised by Klaus Dolag (LMU) which also included Klaus’ group. Discussions included semi empirical modelling and comparison with hydrodinamical simulations (in concrete magneticum) and semi-analytical model.
  • May 2022: Kaffeerunde at MPE (Coffee break tutorials). IvĂĄn Muñoz-RodrĂguez (NOA) gave a talk about his research at the weekly meeting of the high energy group at MPE. Post presentation there was lively discussions, questions and Ivan received good feedback.
  • June 2022: IvĂĄn Muñoz-RodrĂguez (NOA), participated in the weekly seminar ‘ESO lunch talk’ and presenting his work to members. The seminars are organised by ESO (European Sothern Observatory), Vincenzo Maineri and Tony Mroczkowski.
  • June & July 2022: During his secondment at OmegaLambdaTec IvĂĄn Muñoz-RodrĂguez (NOA), gave talks about his research and the project he was developing during his secondment in collaboration with Aswin Manohar (OLT). Lively discussions and good feedback followed.
