BiD4BESt has just enjoyed its first online school. Across two weeks five academics shared their knowledge on Bayesian Inference, X-ray Spectral Analysis, Machine Learning and its Applications to Astronomy, and Fitting the Spectral Energy Distributions of galaxies and AGN.
Our Early Stage Researchers welcomed PhD astrophysicist students from across Europe, China, India, the UK and USA to the School.
Apart from the occasional wi-fi connection hiccups all the lectures ran smoothly with students asking questions during the ninety-minute sessions.
Some highlights:
Elena Selletin (Universitat Leiden) using a homemade whiteboard to explore Bayesian Inference.
Johannes Buchner (Max-Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics) discussing how to set a powerlaw model
Philipp Eller’s (Department of Physics Technical University, Munich) colourful algorithms while discussing decision trees
Marc Huertas-Company (Observatoire de Paris) discussing the complexities of classification for an astrophysicist
David Rosario (Durham University) demonstrating how to run FortesFit code
